Feather Almanac

I like to take pictures of animals. I have a lot of pictures of birds. These are my best bird pictures with some information on them.

  • Whimbrel
This was my favorite wading bird on my trip to Acapulco. The city was too crowded for us so we found an Airbnb south of the city where the beaches were mostly free of people. There’s something about their curved bills that make them more interesting than the other wading birds I saw. I liked watching them ebb and flow with the waves looking for snacks in the sand.
  • Great Kiskadee
This handsome flycatcher is one of the most prominent birds at the resorts of Quintana Roo, Mexico. They don’t seem to be afraid of anything and you’ll find them everywhere from the hotel to the beach. They get the name kiskadee from their call. In fact, their common name in most other languages is onomatopoeic as well.
  • Rose-throated Becard
I found this beautiful bird on the edge of the jungle in the Mayan Riviera. I had a hunch there were some unique birds about so I opened up the Merlin app (Android/iPhone) from Cornell Labs and looked for a photogenic bird, then played the calls of a few that I found. This was the result.
  • Vermilion Flycatcher
These are one of my favorite birds to see, even if they are relatively common here in Mexico. They’re fun to watch swooping back and forth from their perch to grab insects in midair. I’ve seen the female, which isn’t nearly as colorful as the male, but I haven’t caught a picture of it yet…
