Eidos and Warner Bros. Announce Batman: Arkham Asylum

You knew it was coming and now it is upon us. Eidos has just announced a new Batman game in partnership with Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment. The new game is titled Batman: Arkham Asylum which promises to be “a dark, action packed videogame adventure.”

The setup of the game is Batman is delivering The Joker to Arkham Asylum where a trap is set for him by the myriad denizens of Gotham’s madhouse. The press release says Arkham Asylum will deliver an “immersive combat gaming experience” with an original script by Paul Dini.

According to Eidos CEO Phil Rogers “Players become Batman, like he has never been seen before in a video game, as he fights through intense circumstances in Arkham Asylum utilizing his intuitive detective skills and aggressive melee attacks.”

Does that mean that this will be some bizarre love child of Phoenix Wright and Final Fight? Surely Capcom already has the rights to that.

From the press release:

Batman: Arkham Asylum offers players the chance to battle Gotham’s worst villains with Batman’s physical and psychological strength in a graphically distinct and story-driven game,” said Martin Tremblay, President, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment. “We look forward to working with Eidos on expanding DC Comics’ world-renowned character Batman in the game space with a noticeably different feature set in an incredibly dark interactive environment.”

It sounds like there will be lots of opportunities to scare the bowels out of some villians as well as beat it out of them. I also imagine that the style of the game will be largely based off of Christopher Nolan’s dark The Dark Knight style. I’m also interested to know if “interactive environment” means I can beat somebody through a wall, climb in-game objects or simply blow stuff up.

I’m curious to see more about this game as more information comes out.
